WITGRITFIT Gamified Career Workshop at St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School

On the 23rd of May, St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary 1 students explored the world of careers through the WITGRITFIT Gamified Career Workshop. The session was hosted by Ms. Wendy who is a prime example of the importance of career mobility.

Interestingly, Ms. Wendy is a trained air stewardess who decided to reinforce her career through education in Training and then Healthcare. Her story inspired the students to develop perseverance, career resilience and continuous learning.

Without much delay, Ms. Wendy kicked off the game session and students quickly created their characters who would begin their careers in Singaland.

Real-life Simulation in Singaland

Singaland is a simulated working world designed according to the WITGRITFIT Framework. It poses real-life challenges and opportunities, and allows students to explore the world of careers through role play.

As they equip their characters with education, skills and work experiences, students also earn income. In the game, they can choose to spend their money on gadgets, avatar aesthetics, cars, houses or travel.

However, just like the real world, money and energy is limited. Therefore, players will have to learn how to manage their characters when these resources run out.

During the course of the game, some students will accrue debt and will need to find ways to navigate their way through it. Through this, they discover the importance of perseverance, career planning and good decision making.

“The game taught me not to do things impulsively.”

Upskilling and Career Resilience

While playing the game, students can gain skills through education, the Career Centre or working experiences. These skills enable them to find work and get promotions.

During the third round, some students experienced retrenchment with several sectors closing down. They had to decide whether or not to wait for the sector to recover, or upskill in another industry in order to look for a job.

Ultimately, this gives students the opportunity to explore careers in other industries as well and educate them on the importance of having diverse skill sets.

Career Satisfaction

One of the elements on the Leaderboard (besides earnings, position and education) is happiness. A player’s happiness points is determined by how much their Core Values align with the work that they have chosen.

For example, if a player has chosen money as a core value and works in a job that pays very well, he or she will be happy. On the other hand, someone who values flexibility will not be happy when working in a company that adheres to strict working hours.

This element of the game introduces a new perspective on how students can evaluate career success. Some students are puzzled as to why they have so much money, but rank low in regards to happiness.

“The game taught me a new way of evaluating careers.”

Career Guidance Tools

At the end of the session, Ms Wendy drew attention to the available tools on SkillsFuture. Students can log in and access these tools to discover their career interests, skills, work values and learning styles.
