In February and March, WITGRITFIT arrived at the gates of ITE College East and Northland Secondary School with our Career Design Game to take students on a life journey – in just a few hours!
Hundreds of students gathered to go through a gamified simulation of careers based on decisions of their own choosing, and took away learning points as well as their unique WITGRITFIT Career Canvas.
ITE College East
We were particularly satisfied with the outcome of our session at ITE College (East) for Events Management students, as we built the session around covering specific situations, challenges and opportunities of the sector.
“The games were engaging and the theory part of the workshop is easy to understand.”
– Events Management Student from ITE College (East)
Our master facilitator Andros was blown away by their energy and proactiveness during the session. We made sure to combine concepts that the students have learnt in their study of Events Management and incorporate examples and applications so as to provide a more custom and tailored experience.
Northland Secondary School (2 batches!)
It was not our first rodeo at Northland Secondary School, and we are so fortunate to be able to be bring our game to not one, but two batches of eager students on the 9th and 10th of March.
That said, we did shared firsts during this stint with them!
First off, for the first time ever, we ran the workshop for TWO levels; Sec 2 and Sec 4. (Psst: We think it might have to do with the success of our workshop last year!)
The Sec 4 students were also the first ones to have played our career game twice. We kept our repeat participants on the edge of their seats by giving them a new set of circumstances to achieve different learning objectives and making use of new features in comparison to their first run 2 years ago. This ensures that they take away new learning points even though they’ve played our game before!
“Getting to experience the game again, this time with a [wiser] mindset”
– Sec 4 Student from Northland Secondary School
In addition, we are piloting a mentorship programme for a select group of students. Volunteer mentors will be working hand-in-hand over three 1-hour sessions to give these students more tailored assistance in designing their careers and lives as well as coming up with an actionable plan.
Catch Them Young
WITGRITFIT is immensely appreciative of the opportunity to capture a younger audience of Sec 2 students, especially at an age when they have little to no information and context about what goes into building a career.
Using simple measurable outcomes like happiness, professional standing and skills shed light and clarity on vague concepts hence making it more digestible (and fun!) for our younger participants to discover more about the ambiguous working life.
After the game, students completed their Career Canvas. Students had to be reflective and self-aware in assessing themselves and the crazy roller-coaster of life they had just been on. The activity required them to identify their unbeatable advantage by jotting down what they discovered was their WIT, GRIT and FIT.
Engaging, Practical & Realistic
Here’s what some students said about the workshop:
“I enjoy the games that can be related to my future.”
“The exploration of jobs and opportunities shown and given depending on what you have chosen.”
“The game function was very practical and realistic , showing different career paths and understanding [them]”
“It gave a clearer view which is exactly what I needed and has [taught] me that skills set is very important”
A common consensus among students was how they were able to grasp the lessons brought forward from the workshop in a way that was easy to understand and engaging.
This speaks to the core of WITGRITFIT’s aim of bringing the concept of career design to youths and making the jobs scene easier to navigate, especially at a time when careers in general are going through a radical overhaul.
When surveyed, there was a notable increase in the overall confidence of students to evaluate, navigate, and decide on their future career goals.
All in all, a great month of empowering young minds and providing them with tools to assist them in taking control of their futures.
